3 Critical Success Lessons I Learned From Watching Television Yesterday

I’m a firm believer that you can learn from everything in your environment.
I always attempt to recognize the value in every moment, even if I’m waiting in line at the bank, or watching television. There’s something to be learned from every moment. Each moment is a gift that we must recognize and unravel, in order to receive its benefit.
Today I want to talk about 3 lessons I learned from watching television yesterday
Yesterday my wife was watching a popular talk show in our bedroom. I sat down on the sofa (in front of our bed) with her to watch the show. Within a few minutes of watching I realized that two of the show’s co-hosts recently started their own television shows.
Being a person who is constantly studying success, I asked myself, are these two co-hosts getting their own television shows because they’re the best person for the job, or because of their popularity.
Now, I don’t know the answer for sure, but I would venture to guess that it’s because of their popularity.
…which brings me to the first lesson I learned yesterday.
Lesson #1: Exposure
The lesson is quite simple, if you’re talented, you want to position yourself so that you can be seen by a very large audience. You could be the funniest comedian in the world, but if no one knows about your talent, it won’t profit you much.
If you own a restaurant, you can try to get featured on “The Food Network,” if you’re an excellent writer, then you can write a book and submit it to a publisher. The key is to get in front of a large crowd (if you’ve perfected your talent), people will notice you, and many will support you.
The more people you influence the greater your success.
If you want to be successful, “labor” to get in front of the right audience.
Lesson 2: Help Somebody
This particular talk show features celebrities as “guest,” who typically promote their new movie or television series. What’s the lesson?
The lesson is that you can’t help somebody else out without helping yourself. The celebrity is going on the show to promote their new movie, book, record, et cetera, so they can influence the “talk show’s” large audience, but because celebrities come on the show, the talk show has a large audience. Creating this snowball effect of people helping people, both the talk show and the celebrities are greatly benefiting by helping each other. They are promoting each other. They are co-creators of the situation.
In order to be successful, you must help enough people, or the right people, get what they want.
Lesson 3: People Will Endure
This show also has a lot of commercials!
So what did I learn from this? I learned that if you’re offering something valuable, people will endure unpleasantness in order to receive your value. In other words, because my wife and I wanted to finish watching the show, we endured watching the many commercials.
There’s a saying that goes “No journey is too great, when one finds what he seeks.”
People will sleep outside to get the latest “I-phone,” and will stand in line for days to get tickets to “The Star Wars” movie.
So what’s the lesson? “If you offer something of value, people will knock down your door to get it, if they know about it.” And the best way to let people know about it is to apply the first two lessons.
In closing, this is what I gleaned from watching television yesterday. What can you learn from your environment? Every moment is rich with lessons and principles of success, you just have to look.
