The Secret vs. Religion

Dear Mr. Self Development,

Does the movie “The Secret” conflict with religion?

Steven

I don’t think so, I think some religious people are just confused by the movie “The Secret.”

They don’t see how someone can ask the “Universe” for anything, and receive it.

They believe the right of asking and receiving is solely for them. But Jesus said, “…whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be taken up and cast into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says is going to happen, it will be granted him (NASB).”  The key word is “whoever.”

I believe some of this confusion is caused by a difference in terms.  What “The Secret” calls the “Universe,” and “The Law of Attraction,” the bible would simply call “Faith.”

“The Secret” would say that the “Universe” delivers to you what you think about via the “Law of Attraction.”  The bible would say that you are a creator and you can create with your thoughts and words via faith.

Some people would claim that the “Universe” thinks and makes decisions delivering you what you want.  The bible would claim that your “Faith” is giving you what you think about.

From a conscious perspective, the “Universe” is nothing but a law, it’s not God, it doesn’t think anymore than gravity thinks, it just does what it does, which is respond to your thoughts; both your good thoughts and your bad thoughts without discrimination.

If you focus on making a million dollars, the “Universe” will show you money making opportunities based on your thoughts.  And guess what, if you focus on trying to steal a car, the “Universe” will show you the best way to get it done.

This is because it’s a law.  It’s a double-edged sword.  It doesn’t know right from wrong.  A sword can be used to heal or to kill.  A doctor uses a knife to cut out cancer and a mugger uses it for murder; it all hinges on the person wielding the knife.

The “Universe” is neither good nor bad; it’s just a law that responds to your thoughts.  You are the one that’s either good or bad, and you are responsible for how you utilize the law.  Just like a doctor and a mugger are both responsible for how they utilize their knives.

Let’s say that someone with high-blood pressure wanted to manifest a piece of cheesecake.  The “Universe” does not know the person has high-blood pressure.  The “Universe” will deliver them the cheesecake, even it kills the person.

The “Universe” is a law and mankind has the responsibility to utilize the law to the greatest good of all concerned.

The movie “The Secret” is not really about religion or God, and by in-large does not conflict with religion, it is simply a demonstration of science and law.  I hope this has cleared up some confusion and I’m sure it’s raised even more questions.
