The Lemonade Diet

Dear Mr. Self Development,
Have you heard about the Lemonade Diet? What do you think about it?
Rebbecca
Yes, I’ve heard about the Lemonade Diet. The Lemonade Diet was created by the late Naturopath Stanley Burroughs. The diet consists of fasting to rid the body of toxins, created by improper diet, lack of exercise and negative mental attitudes. The purpose of the Lemonade Diet is to dissolve and eliminate toxins and congestion; to cleanse the kidneys and digestive system; to purify glands; to eliminate waste and hardened materials in the joints and muscles; to build a healthy bloodstream; to maintain optimal blood pressure; and to what you all are waiting to hear…to lose weight. As a reducing diet it is superior in every way, reducing fat at a rate of about two (2) pounds a day for most persons, without harmful side effects [quoted from www.thelemonadediet.com].
I tried the Lemonade Diet a few months ago, but not because I need to lose any weight. I tried the diet because I was intrigued at how people could go for ten days without eating and not be hungry, while only drinking water, lemon juice, maple syrup and cayenne pepper.
To me, fasting is the ultimate form of controlling your appetite, so I wanted to see if I could drink only “Lemonade” and not be hungry. I figure if you can control your appetite, there are a lot of other things you can control in your life. Of course the opposite is also true.
I was surprised to find while on the Lemonade diet I was not that hungry; dispelling the myth that you must take in tons of calories to have your appetite satisfied throughout the day. Now, don’t get me wrong, I’m not going to do this Lemonade diet everyday, but it did teach me a lesson.
The Lesson
It doesn’t take that much food to quench my hunger everyday, or anybody else for that matter. A lot of our eating is a mistaken attempt to fill our thirst. I learned that if I would drink 10-14 glasses of water a day (with a little lemon); this would go a long way in satisfying my mistaken hunger for food and allow greater control over my desire to eat.
This makes sense to me, I know that the mind itself cannot be satisfied, it is insatiable, it was built for the future, and therefore it cannot be totally satisfied presently. The reality is we don’t need nearly as much of anything as we think we do; except when it comes to positive things that allow us to grow
.
Granted I do believe you should eat six meals a day. This fasting lesson is not about starvation, but about control.
The Lemonade Diet as a Weight Loss Tool
I do not support any specific diet other than proper eating and exercise. Fasting on occasion is beneficial, but if you’re losing more than two pounds a week you may be losing muscle, which will in turn hamper your metabolism and continued weight maintenance.
This is why people regain even more weight than they lose while on diets that focus on starvation (in addition to our holistic need to make up for the missed meals when the fast is over).
The point: You will re-gain the weight you lose on the Lemonade Diet. Don’t go on the diet to lose weight; go on the diet if you believe it will cleans your system or use it as a teaching tool like I did.
