Success versus Mediocrity

Dear Mr. Self Development
Why do some people experience success, while others only experience mediocrity?
Kevin
Kevin, I’ve spent most of my adult life analyzing this question.
About one year ago one of my uncles visited me and gave me a great illustration that explains why some people experience great success, while many others only experience mediocrity in life.
At the time my uncle visited me I had just started “lifting weights;” knowing that my uncle was once a successful weightlifter I asked him for the secret of his success. His answer not only gave me the secret to weightlifting success, but answers the question, “Why do some succeed, while others experience mediocrity?”
Among other tips my uncle gave, he told me that there are two types of weightlifters, those that “train” and those that “workout.”
He said if you want to succeed, you must “train!”
I thought about that, and I’ve come to the conclusion that there are two kinds of people.
1. Those That Train
You can always tell when someone in the gym is “TRAINING.” They are intense! There’s something different about them. They have a game plan, they have a routine, they have passion, they have good habits, and they “put in the time.”
When they’re in the gym, you can see the struggle on their face as they challenge themselves beyond what they were lifting last month. They are growing because they’re doing the heavy-lifting, what others are unwilling or uncomfortable doing.
Their regiment is difficult, and many are unwilling to follow their path (most prefer to take shortcuts). They are consistent, and to listen to their daily diet and workout routine would astound most.
They master the details; they know the inner workings of carbohydrates, fats and proteins as well as the metabolic requirements for proper muscle growth.
They understand that failure in weightlifting is a fundamental requirement for success.
They are aware that in the process of sculpting their body it will require unprecedented focus and discipline. Discipline in the gym and discipline when they leave the gym. To them, success is a science that is simply understood, and it’s just a matter of time before they have the results they seek.
2. Those Who Workout
Then there’s people who workout; they go to the gym and pretty much do the same activities as the people who train.
They get on the treadmill, lift some weights, and have plans to have a sculpted body one day. BUT, they’re not training.
They have no proven game plan that’s being worked consistently and with passion. They have not been sufficiently educated on working out. They usually don’t put in enough time; not fully understanding the dedication and commitment requisite for success (they don’t want to get their hands “too dirty”).
They often appear to be going through the motions; often not lifting very heavy weights, rarely leaving their comfort zone, and barely challenging themselves. They are capable of much more, but will not achieve it. They are so much more then what they have become.
So here’s the quintessential question: In life, are you going to “train,” or are you going to workout? You only live once, I suggest you start training; it is the requirement for success.
