2 Steps to Daily Flossing
By Mr. Self Development on May 5, 2009 in Health
I would love to start flossing daily, but in my rush to get ready in the morning, I rarely get it done. I would appreciate if you could help (and so would my dentist). Regards,
Steven
Steven, great question!
When I was a kid my mother told me a helpful flossing joke, it went something like this:
Patient to the Doctor, “Do I have to floss behind all of my teeth every day?”
Doctor, “No, just floss behind the ones you want to keep.”
The point is, flossing is a critical step in the maintenance of healthy teeth and gums, and as of this writing, there are no sufficient substitutes. With this in mind, let me give you an easy two-step solution to this difficult and common problem that you pose.
Step 1:
Purchase a brand of floss that you like (feel free to splurge
) and leave it on your vanity counter where you will see it every day (place the floss in the same place every day).
Steven, if you’re a “junkie” person, you may need to keep your vanity clean in order for the little white box of floss to be seen daily.
The key is to place the floss where you won’t miss it!
Step 2:
This is the important one. You want to floss before brushing your teeth, not after, and for no longer than one minute (you can increase the time after you’ve formed the habit).
We all have one minute to perform such a critical task; if you don’t think it’s important, you may want to re-read the joke above.
If you absolutely do not have one-full-minute-to-spare on some days, you can just go ahead and floss behind the teeth you definitely want to keep
.
Remember: Never brush your teeth without first flossing for those critical seconds. If you start doing this today, you will be flossing daily in no time.
And that’s it, a very simple solution, to a difficult problem. So get started now, put your favorite floss on your vanity counter and never brush your teeth without flossing first again.
Soon, flossing will be second nature to you….oh, you want to know why this works….It works because you are tying a new habit to an existing habit; this always makes learning new habits so much easier.
Tip: Always ensure you have several containers of floss available for use and be sure to talk to your dentist about proper flossing techniques.
